Our Serenity Retreats are for men and women who are in recovery from alcohol or chemical addictions. They provide an opportunity for people who follow the 12-step program to gather together to focus on their spiritual lives, and share their struggles and joys in a safe and respectful context.
The late Gerald May said, “To be human is to be addicted…and to be addicted is to be in need of God’s grace.”
“Many of the old understandings to which I had been addicted were stripped away, leaving a desert like spaciousness where my customary props and securities no longer existed. Grace was able to flow into this emptiness, and something new was able to grow. Fresh understandings took root, and the insights that emerged were clearer, simpler, and more beautiful.” Gerald May, Addiction And Grace.
Retreat theme for 2018: The Forgotten Heart: Steps 6 and 7 – presented by Fr. Dennis J. Mason
Our Serenity Retreat is for those in recovery from addictions. It’s a chance to explore recovery with an inspiring director in a setting conducive to prayer, reflection relaxation, healing and growth.
Some people call Steps 6 and 7 (6. We’re entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character. 7. Humbly ask Him to remove our shortcomings. )the Forgotten Steps. Other people call them the Heart of the Program. Like so many things in recovery, they’re “both/and.” Join us as we share experience, strength and hope about ways of working Steps 6 and 7 in our everyday lives.
Fr. Dennis J. Mason is a member of the Franciscan Friars Conventual. He has served as a teacher, pastor and retreat director since 1978. Fr. Dennis has been involved with the recovery community for three decades. He is convinced that the 12 Steps are a key to a life of freedom and happiness. Fr. Dennis is eager to share his experience and learn from the experience of others who share that conviction.
